What does FSA regulate?

Japan’s financial regulator. Firms conducting financial instruments business, including retail forex margin trading, are generally required to register as Financial Instruments Business Operators.

Jurisdiction: Japan. The register is the primary place to confirm an entity’s current status and permissions; this guide does not certify a broker or account.

Licence types (general guidance)

Financial Instruments Business Operator
Registration types define the business permitted. Retail forex is subject to specific leverage and conduct rules.
Local Finance Bureau registration
Registration numbers typically reference the relevant Local Finance Bureau.

General description only. It does not imply that any particular broker holds any of these authorisations.

What should you check on the official register?

  1. 1Locate the registration number and entity name on the provider’s Japanese-language disclosures.
  2. 2Check the list of registered Financial Instruments Business Operators on the FSA website.
  3. 3Review FSA warnings listing unregistered overseas firms soliciting Japanese residents.
  • Exact legal entity name and licence or registration number.
  • Current licence or registration status and authorised activities.
  • Retail or wholesale permissions where the register distinguishes them.
  • Registered website, contact details and any authorised-representative relationship.

What a licence does not prove

A licence belonging to one group entity does not automatically apply to every client, country, website or product offered under the same brand. Confirm the contracting entity and whether the listed permissions cover your client type and activity.

For a practical search sequence, read how to check if a broker is regulated and how to read a register entry.

Risk notes

  • Overseas entities soliciting Japanese residents without registration are regularly named in FSA warnings.
  • Japanese protections apply to the Japan-registered entity only.
